I want to tell you about turning on Microsoft Fabric for your team. Think of Fabric as the engine that powers Power BI and other data tools. By flipping a switch, everyone (or just the people you pick) can start using Fabric right away. Here’s how it works, in plain and simple steps.

What you need first

  • You must be a Fabric administrator.

Turning on Fabric for everyone in your tenant

  • Sign in to the Microsoft Fabric portal with your admin account.

  • Go to Admin on the left, then Tenant settings.

  • Find Users can create Fabric items and turn that switch on.

  • If you only want a few people to get access, pick Specific security groups. You can either list the groups who get access, or list the groups who don’t.

  • Click Apply.

Congratulations, now everyone you chose can make Fabric workspaces, reports, pipelines, or whatever they need.

Turning on Fabric for one capacity

There are some steps that need to be performed in order to enable the Fabric capacity:

  • In the Fabric portal, go to Admin > Capacity.

  • Click the capacity name.

  • Go to the Delegate tenant settings tab.

  • Under Users can create Fabric items, check Override tenant admin selection and make sure the switch is on.

  • If you want to limit it further, pick Specific security groups or Except specific security groups.

  • Click Apply.

How to turn Fabric off

If you decide you/your organization aren’t ready for Fabric yet, go back to the same switches and turn them off. People will still see Fabric items they already have access to, but they won’t be able to make new ones.

Things to keep in mind

  • Even if Fabric is off for a user, they can still view items (for instance - reports, dashboards, files etc.) if someone else made them and they have read access.
